Puddle flange fabrication in India — wall penetration steel for structural steel and waterproofing
A puddle flange is a steel disc or plate with a central hole through which a pipe, conduit, or structural member passes through a concrete wall or floor slab — waterproofing the penetration by providing a mechanical seal between the steel penetrating element and the concrete. Puddle flange fabrication in India is a specialist but important part of the steel fabrication market — without correctly specified and installed puddle flanges, basement walls, underground tank walls, and submerged concrete structures leak around pipe and conduit penetrations.
What a puddle flange does and why it matters
When a pipe or conduit penetrates a concrete wall — particularly below ground or in a water-retaining structure — there is a potential path for water to travel along the interface between the pipe surface and the concrete. The puddle flange interrupts this path by providing a disc of steel welded to the pipe, which is embedded in the concrete and acts as a mechanical stop to water migration. The flange also provides a fixing point for a future repair if the joint between the pipe and concrete needs to be resealed.
Puddle flange fabrication is required for a wide range of applications in Indian construction: basement wall pipe penetrations in commercial and residential buildings, inlet and outlet pipe penetrations through water retaining walls in tanks and reservoirs, cable conduit penetrations through dam walls and retaining structures, and structural steel column penetrations through ground slabs and basement walls in buildings where the steel column needs to continue below ground without a break in the waterproofing layer.
Types of puddle flange fabrication
Standard pipe puddle flanges — a circular plate with a central hole matching the pipe outside diameter, welded to the pipe at a specified distance from the wall face. The plate diameter is typically 150 to 200mm larger than the pipe outside diameter. Standard puddle flange fabrication uses 6mm or 8mm mild steel plate for the flange disc and fillet weld to the pipe on both faces. Suncorporation fabricates standard pipe puddle flanges from DN40 to DN600 pipe sizes.
Structural column puddle flanges — a plate with a central opening matching the column cross-section (rectangular or circular) welded to the structural column. Structural column puddle flange fabrication is more complex than pipe puddle flanges because the column section — UC, hollow section, or built-up box — has a non-circular perimeter, and the weld between the puddle flange plate and the column surface needs to be continuous and liquid-tight on all four sides of the section.
Custom puddle flanges — non-standard shapes or sizes, flanges with multiple penetrations, flanges combined with a wall sleeve, or puddle flanges for high-pressure applications where a thicker plate is required. Suncorporation fabricates custom puddle flanges to drawing for any shape of penetrating element and any wall thickness.
Puddle flange fabrication materials and standards
Standard puddle flange fabrication uses mild steel plate to IS 2062 E250, which is compatible with the concrete alkaline environment. For applications in corrosive or aggressive ground conditions, hot-dip galvanised puddle flanges or stainless steel puddle flanges are specified. Galvanised puddle flanges are suitable for most below-ground applications in Indian soil conditions; stainless steel puddle flanges are used for chemical resistance requirements or for long-service-life infrastructure applications where the galvanised coating might be depleted before the design life is reached.
The weld between the puddle flange plate and the penetrating element — pipe or structural member — must be continuous and liquid-tight. Intermittent fillet welds are not acceptable for puddle flange fabrication; the entire perimeter must be welded in a single continuous run with no start-stop defects or undercut. Suncorporation applies liquid penetrant testing to all puddle flange welds before dispatch to confirm weld continuity and freedom from surface defects.
Puddle flange fabrication cost and lead time — India 2026
Standard mild steel puddle flange fabrication in India costs Rs 280 to Rs 450 per unit for pipe puddle flanges from DN40 to DN200, and Rs 550 to Rs 1,200 per unit for larger sizes up to DN600. Hot-dip galvanised puddle flanges add approximately Rs 180 to Rs 350 per unit depending on the size. Stainless steel puddle flanges cost Rs 800 to Rs 3,500 per unit in SS 304 depending on pipe size, due to the higher stainless steel material cost.
Structural column puddle flanges are priced on a project basis — the cost depends on the column section size, the plate thickness required for the wall penetration depth, and the weld complexity. A typical UC column puddle flange ranges from Rs 1,500 to Rs 6,000 per unit depending on column size and plate specification.
Lead time for standard puddle flange fabrication at Suncorporation is 5 to 10 working days for quantities under 50 units. Rush orders for site-critical puddle flanges can be accommodated in 2 to 3 days for standard sizes. We respond to all puddle flange enquiries within 24 hours with a quotation and lead time confirmation.
