Pedestrian bridge fabrication in India — foot over bridges, railway FOBs and industrial walkways
Pedestrian bridge fabrication in India covers a wide range of structures — from simple covered walkways that connect buildings on an industrial campus to the multi-span foot over bridges at major railway stations that carry thousands of commuters every day. What connects them is the need for structural reliability, adequate weather protection, and anti-slip, anti-vandal detailing that makes a pedestrian structure actually usable over a long service life. Suncorporation has fabricated pedestrian bridges for Indian Railways, municipal authorities, and industrial clients across India.

Types of pedestrian bridge fabrication in India
Railway station foot over bridges
The foot over bridge at a railway station is one of the most common pedestrian bridge fabrication projects in India. Indian Railways operates thousands of stations, and a large proportion need FOBs allowing passengers to cross from one platform to another without going down to track level. Structural requirements are governed by IRS B1 for the steel specification and the IS 875 Part 2 crowd loading of 5 kN/m². A typical station FOB consists of the main span — a truss or plate girder crossing the tracks — and stair structures at each end. The main span must clear overhead electrification equipment on electrified lines — a minimum clearance of typically 6.5 metres above rail level. Suncorporation fabricates railway station FOBs to IRS specification with full material certificates, weld inspection records, IRS two-coat painting, and dimensional certification.
Road pedestrian bridges and skywalks
Pedestrian bridge fabrication for road crossings — skywalks over arterial roads, pedestrian links between shopping centres, covered walkways over busy junctions — uses IS 800:2007 design standard but with higher aesthetic requirements than industrial steel. Urban pedestrian bridges are visible civic infrastructure, and section choices and weld dressing on exposed members matter. Suncorporation fabricates road pedestrian bridges with exposed steel finished to a higher standard — welds ground flush on visible faces, consistent section dimensions, and high-build paint systems applied in the workshop rather than on site.
Industrial plant walkways and access bridges
Industrial plant pedestrian bridge fabrication covers elevated walkways, pipe rack access bridges, and plant interconnection bridges. These need to be functional, safe, and maintainable — designed for maintenance personnel with tools and equipment, occasional movement of small equipment trolleys, and wind loads at the plant’s location. Suncorporation typically uses standard structural sections for industrial access bridges — universal beams for the main span, angles and flats for handrail systems, and open steel grating for the deck surface.

Structural systems used in pedestrian bridge fabrication
Simply supported plate girder — the most common system for spans up to 20 metres. Two plate girders connected by cross beams carrying the deck. Simple to fabricate, simple to erect. Girder depth typically span/12 to span/15.
Through truss — for longer spans or where structural depth below the deck needs to be minimised. The truss diagonals rise above the deck level and the handrail is integrated with the upper chord. Through trusses allow longer spans with less material than a solid web plate girder.
Arch — for longer spans where the aesthetic of the arch form is valued and foundation conditions can resist the horizontal thrust. Arch pedestrian bridges are more expensive to fabricate than truss bridges of equivalent span due to complex geometry, but they are structurally efficient and visually distinctive.
IS standards for pedestrian bridge fabrication in India
- IS 800:2007 — primary structural steel design and fabrication code for non-IRS pedestrian bridges.
- IRS B1-2001 — for railway station foot over bridges and bridges on Indian Railways property.
- IS 875 Part 2 — 5 kN/m² crowd loading for public access pedestrian bridges.
- IS 875 Part 3 — wind loads for exposed pedestrian bridge structures.
- IS 1893:2016 — seismic design for pedestrian bridges in higher seismic zones.
- IS 2062 — steel material standard for all structural members.
- IS 1477 — painting specification for structural steel in atmospheric exposure.
Pedestrian bridge fabrication cost in India — 2026
- Railway station FOB, IRS specification, plate girder main span: Rs 90,000 to Rs 1,10,000 per MT ex-workshop. Includes stair structures, landings, handrails, IRS painting.
- Road pedestrian bridge, IS 800:2007, plate girder or through truss: Rs 95,000 to Rs 1,20,000 per MT ex-workshop. Higher surface finish standard.
- Industrial plant access walkway, standard finish: Rs 75,000 to Rs 95,000 per MT ex-workshop.
- Arch pedestrian bridge, long span: Rs 1,20,000 to Rs 1,60,000 per MT ex-workshop. Arch geometry fabrication complexity drives the premium.
- Erection: Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000 per MT depending on site access, span height, and erection method.
Getting a pedestrian bridge fabrication quotation from Suncorporation
To get a quotation for pedestrian bridge fabrication, we need: the span and width of the bridge, the structural system, the loading specification, the location, the material and painting specification, and whether erection is to be included. A sketch showing the span arrangement is sufficient for a budget estimate; IFC structural drawings are needed for a firm quotation. We respond to all pedestrian bridge fabrication enquiries within 24 hours.
