Plate fabrication in India — steel plate cutting, bending, rolling and welding services

Plate fabrication in India covers the cutting, forming, and welding of flat steel plate into a wide range of structural and industrial components — from simple gusset plates and base plates that form part of a larger structural assembly to complex tank shells, pressure vessel components, and heavy structural elements where the plate is the primary structural material. Suncorporation has been doing plate fabrication work in our Hyderabad workshop for over 20 years, using CNC plasma cutting, plate rolling, press braking, and qualified welding processes to produce components across a wide range of sizes and thicknesses.

What plate fabrication in India covers

Structural plate fabrication — gusset plates, end plates, base plates, splice plates, stiffener plates, and connection plates that form part of structural steel assemblies. Every structural steel frame contains hundreds of individual plate components, cut from flat plate, drilled or punched for bolt holes, and welded or bolted into the structural assembly.

Tank and vessel shell plate fabrication — the curved shell courses of storage tanks, end caps, nozzle flanges, and box structure panels. These require plate rolling in addition to cutting, and the weld seams need to be full-penetration butt welds made to qualified procedures and inspected by appropriate NDT methods.

Heavy plate girder fabrication — the web plates and flange plates of fabricated plate girders for bridges, crane runway beams, and transfer structures. Typically long narrow plates in thicknesses from 12mm to 60mm, cut to precise dimensions and welded together with longitudinal fillet welds forming the plate girder I-section.

Custom fabricated components — lifting lug plates, equipment mounting pads, custom flanges and brackets, sole plates for machinery, and foundation bolt plates. One-off or small-batch fabrications requiring individual attention to layout and cutting.

Plate fabrication processes at Suncorporation

CNC plasma cutting

CNC plasma cutting is the primary cutting process for plate fabrication at Suncorporation. Our plasma cutting table handles plate widths up to 3,000mm and lengths up to 12,000mm, cutting mild steel and stainless steel from 3mm to 50mm thickness with edge squareness and cut surface quality that manual cutting cannot match. The CNC control means that complex plate shapes — curved cuts, notched corners, angled edges for weld preparation — are cut directly from the DXF file generated by our structural steel detailing software. For plates above 50mm thickness, oxy-fuel cutting is used.

Plate rolling

Plate rolling converts flat plate into curved shell courses for tanks, vessels, and tubular structural elements. Suncorporation’s plate rolling machine handles plates up to 2,500mm wide in thicknesses from 4mm to 40mm. After rolling, plate edges are checked for the correct radius using a template, and the longitudinal seam is welded and inspected by liquid penetrant testing and, where specified by IS 803, by radiography.

Press braking and welding

Press braking forms flat plate into angular sections — angle brackets, channel sections, box sections, and L-shaped or U-shaped components. Our press brake handles plates up to 3,000mm wide in thicknesses up to 20mm. Plate fabrication welding at Suncorporation uses MIG for standard mild steel plate work, SAW for long straight seam welds in thick plate, and TIG for stainless steel and high-quality full-penetration joints. All welders are certified to IS 7307 for their specific process, position, and plate thickness range. Weld procedures are qualified to IS 9595.

Materials used in plate fabrication in India

The most common material is mild steel to IS 2062 in grades E250, E300, E350, and E410. For pressure vessel applications, IS 2002 steel is specified. Stainless steel plate fabrication uses grades SS 304 and SS 316 for food, pharmaceutical, and chemical applications — fabricated in a dedicated stainless steel area in our workshop to prevent carbon steel contamination, with pickling and passivation of all welds after fabrication.

Plate fabrication cost in India — 2026

  • Standard mild steel plate fabrication, cut to shape, no welding: Rs 30 to Rs 55 per kg depending on plate thickness and cut complexity.
  • Structural connection plates, cut and drilled, standard inspection: Rs 40 to Rs 65 per kg.
  • Mild steel tank shell plate fabrication, rolled, IS 803 inspection: Rs 55 to Rs 80 per kg for the shell fabrication only.
  • Heavy plate girder web and flange plates, 20 to 50mm, cut and edge-prepared: Rs 45 to Rs 70 per kg.
  • Stainless steel plate fabrication, SS 304 or SS 316: Rs 200 to Rs 380 per kg depending on thickness and weld complexity.
