Structural steel erection contractor India — crane-assisted frame erection and installation

Structural steel erection in India — the process of assembling fabricated steel components into the completed structure on site — is where the quality of fabrication is either confirmed or exposed. A steel frame that has been fabricated precisely, with accurate bolt hole positions, correct member lengths, and properly set cambers, goes up smoothly and efficiently. A frame with dimensional errors, misaligned bolt holes, or incorrect piece marks creates a cascade of site problems that add cost and time to every stage of the erection process. Suncorporation provides structural steel erection as part of its single-contract fabrication and erection scope — the same organisation that fabricated your steel erects it on site, with the same accountability for quality from start to finish. Our certified riggers and erectors have been installing structural steel frames across India for over two decades.

How structural steel erection works in India — the Suncorporation process

Structural steel erection on an Indian project starts with the erection method statement — a document that describes the crane selection and positioning, the erection sequence, the temporary stability provisions during erection, the lifting arrangement for each element, the safety management provisions, and the inspection hold points. Suncorporation prepares an erection method statement for every structural steel project and submits it for client or structural engineer review before mobilisation. The method statement is not a compliance exercise — it is the planning document that the site supervisor and erection crew work from.

The erection sequence is planned from the approved erection drawings, which show every fabricated element with its piece mark and its position in the completed structure. The sequence is designed to maintain structural stability at every stage of erection — the first elements erected form a stable frame to which subsequent elements are attached. For multi-storey structures, this means erecting and connecting a complete bay before moving to the next. For long-span roof trusses, it means installing temporary propping under the truss until the full span is connected and the bracing system provides permanent lateral stability.

Column bases are established on the concrete foundations using precision survey — checking the base plate level and the column plumb against the structural grid before the connections are fully tightened. Once a column is plumbed and levelled to within the IS 800:2007 Annex G tolerance, the HSFG bolts at the base plate are torqued to the specified proof load. Plumb and level surveys are repeated at each floor level for multi-storey structures, and the cumulative deviation from vertical is tracked against the tolerance limit for the full building height.

Structural steel erection equipment — what Suncorporation uses

The crane selection for structural steel erection in India depends on the weight and geometry of the heaviest lift, the reach required, the site access conditions, and the available crane standing area. Suncorporation uses hydraulic mobile cranes ranging from 25-tonne to 150-tonne capacity for most structural steel erection projects. For heavy long-span elements — ROB plate girders, large transfer trusses, or aircraft hangar frames — larger cranes or crawler cranes may be required, and the crane selection is specified in the erection method statement. For sites with restricted access — urban sites, operating industrial plants, or live railway environments — the crane selection is constrained by the available standing area and the overhead clearances, which is why the method statement and site survey before mobilisation are essential.

HSFG bolting in structural steel erection India

High-strength friction grip (HSFG) bolting — the use of high-tensile bolts torqued to a specified proof load to create clamping friction between mating surfaces — is the standard connection method for structural steel erection in India for all primary connections. IS 800:2007 specifies the bolt grade (property class 8.8 or 10.9 for HSFG), the minimum proof load, and the inspection method (torque testing with a calibrated torque wrench) for HSFG connections. Suncorporation’s erection supervisors carry calibrated torque wrenches and record torque verification for all primary HSFG connections during erection. The torque records are included in the erection quality dossier delivered at project handover.

Structural steel erection cost India — 2026

  • Standard industrial shed erection, PEB or conventional frame: Rs 15,000 to Rs 22,000 per MT of structural steel erected. Flat ground, good crane access, standard eave heights up to 9 metres.
  • Multi-storey commercial or industrial frame erection: Rs 22,000 to Rs 35,000 per MT. Working at height, tower crane or large mobile crane, plumb survey at each floor level.
  • Long-span truss or girder erection: Rs 25,000 to Rs 40,000 per MT. Heavy crane lifts, precise alignment for long elements, temporary propping during erection.
  • ROB and FOB erection including railway traffic block management: Rs 18,000 to Rs 30,000 per MT for approach spans; Rs 35,000 to Rs 60,000 per MT for main span erection within railway traffic blocks, depending on block duration and site conditions.
