Steel shuttering fabrication in India — reusable formwork panels for concrete construction
Steel shuttering fabrication is one of those areas of structural steel work that does not get much attention in the industry press, but it is a significant market in India with a distinct set of technical requirements. Every reinforced concrete structure — slab, beam, column, wall, staircase — needs formwork to hold the concrete in place while it cures. Steel shuttering is replacing timber formwork progressively, because steel panels last longer, produce better concrete finishes, and — when properly designed — are faster to assemble and strip than timber. Suncorporation fabricates steel shuttering for construction contractors across India.

Why steel shuttering instead of timber
The case for steel shuttering fabrication over timber is primarily one of repetition and consistency. A timber formwork panel might be reused 10 to 20 times before the face gets damaged enough to produce poor concrete finishes. A well-made steel shuttering panel can be reused 200 to 500 times if properly handled and maintained. On a large project with hundreds of slab pours, the cost of the shuttering panel is amortised over all those uses — which makes the higher upfront cost of steel shuttering fabrication economical at a relatively modest reuse count. Steel shuttering also produces the same concrete finish on the 200th pour as on the first, assuming panels are properly cleaned and release-agent-coated before each use.
Types of steel shuttering fabrication
Slab shuttering panels
The flat slab panel is the most common product in steel shuttering fabrication in India. A standard slab panel consists of a mild steel face plate — typically 3mm or 4mm thick — welded to a frame of mild steel angles. The frame provides stiffness to prevent the panel from deflecting under the hydrostatic pressure of fresh concrete and the live loads of construction workers above. Pin holes in the panel frame allow adjacent panels to be connected with standard wedge pins for a leak-free joint. Standard panel sizes are typically 300mm x 600mm, 450mm x 900mm, and 600mm x 1200mm — though Suncorporation fabricates custom sizes to suit specific floor plate dimensions and prop spacing.
Column box shuttering
Column box shuttering fabrication for rectangular and square columns uses four individual panel faces clamped together around the column reinforcement cage with yoke pins and wedges. The column box needs to resist the full hydrostatic pressure of fresh concrete from the pour height of the column, which can be several metres — making the face plate thickness and frame section size heavier than for slab shuttering of the same face area. Suncorporation fabricates column box shuttering for square columns from 150mm to 600mm side dimension. The pin hole positions need to be set correctly for the yoke pin design — typically at 300mm centres — so that the yoke pins can be applied at the required frequency up the column height.
Wall form panels
Large wall form panels for retaining walls, basement walls, core walls, and shear walls are among the most structurally demanding products in steel shuttering fabrication. A wall form panel 1.2 metres wide and 3 metres tall with fresh concrete cast to full height behind it carries a hydrostatic pressure load of approximately 40 to 70 kN/m² depending on concrete density and pour rate. Suncorporation fabricates wall form panels with horizontal and vertical walers as specified, pre-drilled for the tie rod pattern shown on the formwork design drawing, with edge frames designed to connect to adjacent panels at vertical joints.

What makes a good steel shuttering panel
Contractors who have used poor-quality shuttering panels know the problems — panels that warp after a few uses, pin holes that do not align between adjacent panels, face plates that delaminate from the frame, weld spatter on the concrete face that damages the concrete finish. The root cause is almost always a combination of thin face plate (2mm instead of 3mm), undersized frame sections, and poor welding practice. Suncorporation uses 3mm face plate as standard for all slab shuttering and 4mm for column and wall shuttering, with angle frame sections sized to limit deflection under the design load to less than 1mm over the panel length. Shuttering panels are welded with continuous fillet welds — not intermittent — and inspected visually before dispatch.
Steel shuttering fabrication cost in India — 2026
- Standard slab shuttering panels, 3mm face plate, angle frame: Rs 55 to Rs 75 per sq ft of face area depending on panel size.
- Column box shuttering, 4mm face plate, heavier frame: Rs 90 to Rs 150 per sq ft. Heavier face plate and deeper frame for column hydrostatic pressure.
- Beam soffit panels, custom size: Rs 65 to Rs 90 per sq ft. Custom sizes attract a small premium over standard panel sizes.
- Wall form panels with walers, 4mm face plate: Rs 95 to Rs 140 per sq ft. Waler system adds material and fabrication work.
- Staircase shuttering: Quoted on a project basis — custom-dimensioned for every staircase with riser heights and tread widths verified on the completed panel set before dispatch.
These rates are ex-workshop Hyderabad. Transport to site is additional at prevailing logistics rates. Minimum order quantities are typically 500 kg for standard sizes and 1,000 kg for custom sizes.
