Structural Steel Fabricators in India — How to Choose and What to Expect

Choosing the right structural steel fabricator for an industrial or infrastructure project in India requires more than a price comparison. This guide covers what to look for in structural steel fabricators, how the fabrication process works, and what IS standards apply.

What Do Structural Steel Fabricators Do?

Structural steel fabricators take raw steel sections and plates and convert them into finished structural components — columns, beams, trusses, girders, bracings, and connections — ready for erection on site. The fabrication process involves cutting, drilling, welding, fitting, and surface treatment, all carried out to detailed shop drawings derived from structural engineering designs.

A qualified structural steel fabricator works to IS 800:2007 (design code), IS 2062 (steel material standard), and IS 816 / IS 9595 (welding standards). Dimensional tolerances, weld quality, and surface preparation must all meet specified limits before despatch.

How to Evaluate Structural Steel Fabricators in India

  • Workshop capacity: Check crane capacity (minimum 10–20T for heavy structural work), plate cutting equipment (plasma or oxy-fuel), welding bays, and finishing area. A fabricator without adequate crane capacity cannot handle heavy built-up sections.
  • IS standards compliance: Ask for weld procedure qualifications (WPS/PQR) and welder qualification records. IS 800:2007 requires these for structural welding.
  • Mill test certificates: Every steel supply must come with an MTC (Mill Test Certificate) from the steel mill. Do not accept fabricators who cannot provide MTCs.
  • Quality inspection: Look for in-house NDT (non-destructive testing) capability — at minimum visual inspection and DPT (dye penetrant testing) for fillet welds, and UT (ultrasonic testing) for full-penetration welds.
  • Erection capability: Many projects need fabricate-and-erect contracts. Confirm the fabricator has their own erection team and lifting equipment rather than subcontracting both.
  • Track record: Ask for references from similar projects — industrial buildings, bridges, conveyor structures, port infrastructure. A fabricator experienced in warehouses may not be suitable for a high-load industrial platform.

Structural Steel Fabrication Process

The fabrication workflow for structural steel follows these stages:

  • Shop drawing preparation: Detailed fabrication drawings produced from structural engineering GA drawings, including material lists, weld symbols, bolt specifications, and dimensions.
  • Material procurement: IS 2062 steel sections and plates sourced from SAIL, JSW, Tata Steel, or equivalent mills, with MTCs.
  • Cutting and profiling: Plasma cutting, oxy-fuel cutting, or sawing to length and shape.
  • Fitting and assembly: Tack welding components together in jigs to maintain dimensional accuracy.
  • Welding: Full welding to WPS, with qualified welders. Common processes: SMAW, FCAW, GMAW.
  • Inspection: Dimensional check, weld visual inspection, NDT where specified.
  • Surface preparation and painting: Blast cleaning to Sa 2.5 or Sa 3, followed by primer and intermediate coats per specification.
  • Despatch: Piece-marking, loading, and delivery to site in erection sequence.
