On a process plant the structural package is rarely the technically hardest scope, but it is often the one that controls programme. Foundations cannot be finalised without base plate and anchor details. Piping cannot be routed without rack tiers in place. Mechanical erection cannot start without equipment supports set to the right elevation. Steel that arrives late, or in the wrong sequence, stalls trades that are far more expensive to keep waiting.
That makes coordination as important as fabrication quality. Structural, piping, mechanical, electrical, and civil documents all describe parts of the same steel. Bent spacing follows the piping layout. Platform elevations follow maintenance access. Equipment supports follow vendor footprints that sometimes arrive after the structural design is issued. Resolving those interfaces before cutting is what keeps the package on schedule.

Scope boundaries matter as much as the list itself. Piping fabrication, valves, insulation, mechanical equipment, and civil works sit outside the structural package unless the contract states otherwise. Setting that boundary clearly at enquiry stage avoids gaps between the structural, mechanical, and civil contractors later.
Structural elements and components
- Columns and bents — rolled or built-up members forming the vertical structure of racks and support frames.
- Longitudinal beams and girders — members spanning between bents to carry tiers, decks, and equipment loads.
- Bracing — vertical and plan bracing controlling sway, wind, and seismic actions as designed.
- Base plates and anchor templates — shop-drilled to the approved pattern and issued to civil before pour.
- Decking and grating — chequered plate or grating at platform and walkway levels where in scope.

Materials
Fabrication uses IS 2062 sections and plate to the grades shown on the drawings. Decking, grating, and handrail material follows the project standard where included in the BOQ. Grades and section sizes are not substituted without an approved concession, and mill test certificates stay traceable to cutting lists through to the quality dossier.
On larger packages material planning is part of the programme, not an afterthought. Section availability varies by size, and heavy plate for base plates or built-up members can have longer lead times than standard rolled sections. Booking material against the phased cutting lists — rather than ordering the whole tonnage at once — keeps stock aligned with the fabrication slots that match the site sequence.
Design coordination considerations
Process plant steel is designed against several load cases at once: equipment operating and test weights, piping loads including thermal effects where the design specifies them, live loads on platforms and walkways, wind, and seismic actions for the applicable zone. The structural drawings define which combinations govern; fabrication follows those member sizes and connection details without reinterpretation.
Access and maintainability decisions carry real cost. Platform elevations that suit maintenance routes, escape widths that satisfy the life-safety layout, and clear space for equipment removal all shape the frame. Fixing these before shop drawings are released is far cheaper than field-welding a landing onto coated steel later.
Clash resolution is the other coordination task. Structural members, piping runs, cable trays, and ductwork share the same envelope. Where a composite model or marked-up GA is available at enquiry stage, interference between bracing and major lines can be flagged before cutting rather than discovered during piping erection.

We align shop drawing release, fabrication slots, and dispatch to your construction schedule — not as a single bulk delivery unless the programme allows. Heat-number traceability, weld inspection records, and dimensional reports are compiled into a project quality dossier at handover. Workshop proof for prequalification is on manufacturer credentials.
Phased release also means revision control has to be tight. Each shop drawing is tied to a specific IFC revision, and superseded drawings are withdrawn from the shop floor so fabrication does not continue against an old issue. Where vendor data changes an equipment footprint after release, affected marks are identified and re-checked before cutting rather than corrected after welding.

Keeping fabrication and erection in-house matters on plant work because responsibility for geometry stays with one party. When the same organisation prepares shop drawings, fabricates the steel, and erects it, interface errors are found and owned internally instead of becoming a commercial dispute between contractors on site.
Fabrication process

- Cutting and drilling — CNC processing of members and connection plates.

- Welding — coded joints to qualified WPS/PQR (IS 9595).
- Inspection and NDT — dimensional, visual, and UT/MPI per the project ITP.
- Surface preparation and coating — blast, primer, paint, or galvanising per specification.

Quality control
Inspection follows the project ITP with hold points agreed at kickoff. Typical activities include material verification against mill certificates, fit-up inspection before welding, visual weld inspection, in-house Level II UT/MPI where required, dimensional checks against shop drawings, and coating inspection after surface preparation.
Customer and third-party inspection are accommodated when specified. Records are compiled progressively rather than assembled at the end, so the dossier is available when the area is handed over rather than weeks later.
