Unlike warehouse mezzanines sized for storage density, plant platforms are designed to the live loads, escape routes, and corrosion environments defined on the structural drawings. Clearances must suit equipment envelopes and piping. Handrail and toe-board details must meet the project safety standard. Drainage and slope must keep process spills and wash-down water off walkways. Expansion joints and interfaces with vessels, pipe racks, and building steel must be coordinated before cutting starts.

Typical environments include cement and steel plants, thermal and captive power stations, chemical units and refineries, water and effluent treatment plants, food processing lines, and manufacturing shops.   • Maintenance platforms — decks sized for tool laydown, filter change-out, and equipment access during shutdowns. Loads are often higher locally around pull spaces and hoist points.
  • Equipment platforms — frames that support or surround packaged skids, small vessels, fans, or drives. Connection geometry must match vendor drawings and nozzle orientations.
  • Pipe rack platforms — maintenance decks and access landings at rack tier levels, often bundled with pipe rack bent and longitudinal steel.
  • Mezzanine platforms — intermediate floors inside sheds or process buildings for storage, offices, or light production. Still designed to drawing loads and fire escape rules, not generic warehouse spans.
  • Access platforms — short decks, landings, and local walkways linking stairs, ladders, and equipment faces. Small tonnage, high interface density with handrails and kick plates.

Structural components

A complete platform package is more than a deck. Typical fabricated elements include:

  • Primary beams — main girders spanning between columns or supporting walls; rolled sections or built-up beams where depth or flange thickness exceeds standard sections.
  • Secondary beams — infill joists that carry grating or chequered plate and distribute live load to the primaries.
  • Columns — rolled or built-up columns with base plates and anchor bolt templates to civil.
  • Base plates and anchor templates — shop-drilled to the approved bolt pattern so site grouting and alignment stay within tolerance.
  • Gratings and chequered plates — walking surface; grating for drainage and light weight, chequered plate where a continuous sealed deck is required.
  • Handrails, toe plates, and kick plates — MS angle or pipe rails to project standard, with toe boards to contain tools and debris.
  • Staircases and landings — stringers, treads, and landings tied to access stair towers or ladders per the GA.
  • Bracing and connections — horizontal and vertical bracing, cleats, end plates, and bolted splices detailed for shop fit-up and site assembly.

Materials used

Material grades follow the IFC drawings. Platform framing at Sun Corporation uses IS 2062 E250 or E350 plate and sections — universal beams, channels, angles, and MS plates — as specified. Decking is chequered plate or grating per BOQ (supplied by us or by others). Handrails are MS angle or pipe to the project standard.

We do not substitute grades or section sizes without an approved concession. Mill certificates travel with the quality dossier so EPC and PMC teams can verify heat numbers against cutting lists.

Fabrication process

Platform steel follows the same workshop sequence used for other plant structures:

  1. Engineering review — GA, connection design, load notes, and interface hold points checked before shop drawings are released.
  2. Material procurement — IS 2062 plate and sections booked to cutting lists with mill test certificates.
  3. CNC cutting and drilling — members and connection plates processed to shop drawing dimensions.
  4. Fit-up — frames assembled on jigs or beds so bay spacing, level, and bolt holes stay consistent across repeat modules.
  5. Welding — joints welded to qualified WPS/PQR (IS 9595) with welders qualified to the applicable WPQ.
  6. Inspection — dimensional, fit-up, and weld checks against the ITP before coating.
  7. Surface preparation and painting — blast, primer, and finish coat, or galvanising, per project specification.
  8. Packing and dispatch — modules marked by area and erection sequence, with bolted hardware bags where required.

Quality control

Inspection activities follow the project ITP. Typical hold points include dimensional inspection of frames and hole patterns, visual weld inspection, fit-up inspection before welding, and UT/MPI where the ITP calls for it. Customer inspection and third-party inspection are accommodated when specified in the contract.

Documentation — mill certificates, WPS/PQR records, inspection reports, and coating records — is compiled for EPC and PMC review. We do not claim certifications that are not part of the issued quality dossier for the job.

Platform design considerations

Good platform steel starts with clear design inputs. Load cases must separate operating, maintenance, and storage ratings, including concentrated loads at hoist points and equipment pull spaces. Deflection limits keep grating and chequered plate comfortable under foot traffic and prevent ponding where sealed decks are used.

Operator access and escape routes set clear widths, stair locations, and handrail continuity. Equipment maintenance needs space for tools, valve stems, and removable panels. Drainage and falls should shed wash-down and process liquids to defined collection points. Expansion and vibration from adjoining machines or conveyors must be allowed for at connections. Safety detailing — toe boards, ladder gates, and mid-rails — follows the project standard, not a generic catalogue detail.

Surface finish options

Finish is as specified on the drawings and coating schedule. Typical options we execute are shot blast with primer and paint systems, hot-dip galvanising (HDG), or a prepared interface for site-applied fireproofing. The choice depends on corrosion environment, temperature, and whether the platform is indoors, outdoors, or inside a process enclosure.

Coating is applied after inspection hold points are cleared so repair of shop damage is limited to transport and erection scuffs.

Integration with other fabricated structures

Platforms rarely stand alone. They share elevations and bolt patterns with pipe racks, landings with fabricated stair towers, and support geometry with equipment supports. Primary framing may use rolled sections or built-up members where the design requires heavier flanges or non-standard depths.
